Yesterday, the Massachusetts Senate passed the PROTECT Act, voting 37โ3 in favor of this sweeping and historic legislation. The bill aims to strengthen constitutional rights, limit local involvement in federal immigration enforcement, and establish safeguards for residents, families, and public employees.
Key provisions include barring police from targeting individuals based on immigration status, restricting warrantless immigration arrests at sensitive locations like schools and hospitals, and separating local policing from federal immigration enforcement efforts. The legislation also supports vulnerable residents and public workers while establishing the right to sue federal immigration agents over civil rights violations.
Originally filed by the Massachusetts Black and Latino caucus, the PROTECT Act has now passed both chambers and will proceed to a conference committee to reconcile differences between versions.
